عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ قَالَ: سَأَلْنَا عَبْدَاللهِ (أَيْ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ) عَنْ هَذِهِ الآيَةِ:
'An Masruqin qala: Sa'alna 'Abdallaha (ayy-ibna Mas'ud) 'an hadhihi-l-ayah:
On the authority of Masruq, who said: We asked Abdullah (i.e. Ibn Mas'ud) about this verse:
وَلَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ أَمْوَاتًا بَلْ أَحْيَاءٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ.
Wa la tahsabanna-l-ladhina qutilu fi sabili-llahi amwatan bal ahya'un 'inda rabbihim yurzaqun.
"And do not regard those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead; rather are they alive with their Lord, being provided for." (Quran 3:169)
قَالَ: أَمَا إِنَّا قَدْ سَأَلْنَا عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ:
Qala: ama inna qad sa'alna 'an dhalika, faqala:
He said: We asked about that and the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
أَرْوَاحُهُمْ فِي جَوْفِ طَيْرٍ خُضْرٍ، لَهَا قَنَادِيلُ مُعَلَّقَةٌ بِالعَرْشِ، تَسْرَحُ مِنَ الجَنَّةِ حَيْثُ شَاءَتْ، ثُمَّ تَأْوِي إِلَى تِلْكَ القَنَادِيلِ.
Arwahuhum fi jawfi tayrin khudrin, laha qanadilu mu'allakatun bi-l-'arsh, tasrahu mina-l-jannati haytu sha'at, thumma ta'wi ila tilka-l-qanadil.
Their souls are in the insides of green birds having lanterns suspended from the Throne, roaming freely in Paradise where they please, then taking shelter in those lanterns.
فَاطَّلَعَ إِلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُمُ اطِّلَاعَةً فَقَالَ: هَلْ تَشْتَهُونَ شَيْئًا؟
Fa-ittala'a ilayhim rabbuhumu-ttila'atan faqala: Hal tashtahuna shay'an?
So their Lord cast a glance at them and said: Do you wish for anything?
قَالُوا: أَيَّ شَيْءٍ نَشْتَهِي، وَنَحْنُ نَسْرَحُ مِنَ الجَنَّةِ حَيْثُ شِئْنَا؟
Qalu: ayya shay'in nashtahi, wa nahnu nasrahu mina-l-jannati haytu shi'na?
They said: What shall we wish for when we roam freely in Paradise where we please?
فَفَعَلَ ذَلِكَ بِهِمْ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ.
Fafa'ala dhalika bihim thalatha marratin.
And thus did He do to them three times.
فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا أَنَّهُمْ لَنْ يُتْرَكُوا مِنْ أَنْ يُسْأَلُوا، قَالُوا: يَا رَبِّ، نُرِيدُ أَنْ تَرُدَّ أَرْوَاحَنَا فِي أَجْسَادِنَا حَتَّى نُقْتَلَ فِي سَبِيلِكَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى.
Falamma ra'aw annahum lan yutraku min an yus'alu, qalu: Ya Rabbi, nuridu an tarudda arwahana fi ajsadina hatta nuqtala fi sabilika marratan ukhra.
When they saw that they would not be spared from being asked, they said: O Lord, we would like for You to put back our souls into our bodies so that we might fight for Your sake once again.
فَلَمَّا رَأَى أَنْ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ حَاجَةٌ تُرِكُوا.
Falamma ra'a an laysa lahum hajatun turiku.
And when He saw that they were not in need of anything, they were let be.
رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ (وَكَذَلِكَ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَالنَّسَائِيُّ وَابْنُ مَاجَهْ).
Rawahu Muslimun (wa kadhalika-t-Tirmidhi wa-n-Nasa'i wa-bnu Majah).
It was related by Muslim (also by at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah).
