عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ:
'An Mu'ādhibni Jabalin raḍiya-llāhu 'anhu qāl:
On the authority of Muadh bin Jabal (RA) who said:
"أَلَا أَدُلُّك عَلَى أَبْوَابِ الْخَيْرِ؟"
"Alā adulluka 'alā abwābil-khayr?"
"Shall I not guide you to the gates of goodness?"
"الصَّوْمُ جُنَّةٌ،"
"Aṣ-ṣawmu junnah,"
"Fasting is a shield,"
"وَالصَّدَقَةُ تُطْفِئُ الْخَطِيئَةَ كَمَا يُطْفِئُ الْمَاءُ النَّارَ"
"waṣ-ṣadaqatu tuṭfi'ul-khaṭī'ata kamā yuṭfi'ul-mā'un-nār"
"and charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire."
"ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَلَا أُخْبِرُك بِمَلَاكِ ذَلِكَ كُلِّهِ؟"
"thumma qāl: alā ukhbiruka bi-milāki dhālika kullih?"
"Then he said: Shall I not tell you the foundation of all that?"
"فَأَخَذَ بِلِسَانِهِ وَقَالَ: كُفَّ عَلَيْك هَذَا."
"fa'akhadha bi-lisānihī wa qāl: kuffa 'alayka hādhā."
"So he took hold of his tongue and said: Restrain this."
رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
Rawāhut-Tirmidhiyyu wa qāl: ḥadīthun ḥasanun ṣaḥīḥ.
Related by at-Tirmidhi, who said it is a Hasan Sahih Hadith.
